The Winter Olympic Games History | Controversies | Sporting events: The Winter Olympic games is a major international sporting event held once in every 4 years. The concept of this Olympics is the recreational assembly of sports practiced on snow and ice. Likewise, Olympic Games are also organized in every four years in different countries. This innovation of Olympic Winter Games is simply an excellent thought of more sporting enthusiasm.
The first Winter Olympics called the ‘1924 Winter Olympics’ was held in France. These winter Olympic games were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were first played in Olympia, Greece, for around 1200 years starting from 8th century BC till 4th century AD. Consequently, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, which resulted in the organization of First Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece, 18 years after which foundation of Winter Olympics was laid.

We know that it is organized in every four years. This trend was broken in the 5th Event in 1948 when a break of 12 years was taken. There were some management and organizing issues due to the Second World War. Further, in 1994, the event took place after just two years of the previous one in 1992.

The last winter Olympic game event was organized successfully in February 2014 in Sochi, Russia. Russia, the host ended up glamorizing the event with the maximum of 33 medals, 13 of which were gold, the maximum Golds obtained by any participant Nation. The USA achieved the second position with 28 medals. In total, it was a huge success as always.
Next Winter Olympic Game Event is currently being enjoyed till 25th February 2018 in PyeongChang County of South Korea. The opening ceremony of the same was a big hit and the eye-catching moment was the Unification of Koreans under the same flag in the Games. This time thirteen nations including India have sent their athletes in South Korea to display the height of sportsmanship. Also, twelve countries like Great Britain, France, and the USA have always participated in the same.
Alpine, Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure skating, Freestyle skiing, Ice Hockey, Luge, Nordic combined Short track speed skating, Skeleton, Ski jumping, Snowboarding and Speed Skating are the games played in Winter Olympics. It must be observed that all the games strictly involve ice and snow. These are highly uncommon sports.
The only national boycott of Winter Olympics during the 1980 Tournaments when Taiwan stood up against its involvement in the same. The issue was of the name under which Taiwan was to participate in Olympics, competing along with China. They also became a platform of Civil War when Soviet Union (USSR, now Russia) entered the event series in 1956, due to pre-existence of the USA in the same.
Again exceptional session of Winter Olympics would be after two years in the largest city in the world, Tokyo in 2020. Also, the Summer Olympic Games or the Conventional Olympics shall be conducted in the same year in the same city. So it would itself be a challenge for IOC and Japanese Government as well to accomplish the same success as of their decision taken in September 2013 in Argentina, regarding this hosting by Tokyo.
Undoubtedly, the concept and ideology of Olympics aim to sync our life with sports and Winter Olympics are targeted to further densify this sports love among everyone around the globe. Each country including India must participate in these tournaments. It not only increases the quality of the sports of the country but also provides employment to many. Unknowingly, Economy of the country is also strengthened and many hidden talents are re-surfaced. We all must appreciate Winter Olympic Games and India’s participation for the first time in 2018 tournament.
