The spreading roots of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) across India

The spreading roots of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) across India; India is a large country with great diversity. Understanding the political sentiments of such a country is as easy as it seems. India is in fact known to have the maximum number of political parties in the world; at different levels being: local, state level, regional and National level.

One of the most popular National level Political party in India is BJP or Bhartiya Janta Party. Having its base quarters in every state, BJP has its headquarters in New Delhi, the capital city of India. BJP is the head of a National level party alliance called National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

BJP was founded in April 1980 from the ‘Bhartiya Jan Sangh’. In 1996, BJP led NDA Coalition Government was voted to power in the center for 16 days and then again from 1998 to 2004 under the Prime Ministership of Atal Bihari Bajpayee.

BJP in the 1990s was uplifted by Lal Krishna Advani, who remained the National President of BJP for a long time. From 2004-2014, BJP served as the main opposition party to the central government.

BJP was in power in Gujrat for a long time under Chief Ministership of Narendra Modi. It was the time when the Party’s command shifted from Nitin Gadkari to Rajnath Singh in wake of 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

Modi was visualized by NDA as their PM Candidate for the elections. BJP and its allies worked hard as per the same resulting in highly unexpected milestone victory of BJP in the center, thus forming a powerful majority central government.

It was a significant breakthrough when under the leadership of Narendra Modi, BJP fetched 282/543 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. It led the new Dawn for BJP and it allies, getting the position in the union government of India after 10 years.

Present Positions

Presently, Narendra Modi is the Parliamentary Committee’s Chairman for BJP and Lok Sabha Leader of BJP crowned as the Prime Minister of World’s Largest Democracy.

Arun Jaitley, the country’s Finance Minister is the Rajya Sabha Leader of BJP. The National President of the Party is Amit Shah. Shah, hailing from Gujrat is considered to be the finest political strategist of any Indian Political Party ever.

LK Advani and MM Joshi are serving as the members of BJP’s advisory committee and former Party Presidents Gadkari and Rajnath Singh are cabinet ministers in the Central Government.

The Diversification

The diversification after gaining power in the center started from Modi’s unmatchable popularity and Amit Shah’s wisest tactics and decisions. Soon, BJP had it’s retired members or associates as Governors in almost all the Indian states.

Existing Governors from the UPA Government were often transferred to remote states making them resign and thus leading to the chairing of NDA’s Governors.

These Governors thus posted helped to spread the Ideologies of BJP in their states along with mobilizing and supporting the party volunteers providing them the environment and subsequent ways to operate in the regions.

BJP is in fairly good and friendly relationship with many local and regional political groups that are popular among a particular sector community of voters. The roots of NDA are spreading at all the level of Indian politics. Today, BJP has around 120 million volunteers across India.

BJP is now in government-forming condition with around 80 political groups in 28 states in India. This has proved to be of great help for the party and it is significant from the way BJP managed to form Government in Goa despite having maximum seats there.

State Elections

Then came the state level Elections where the name and fame of Narendra Modi ruled. The party had already established their rock strong active bases in all the states which helped them drag the voters towards them.

BJP won in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujrat, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh.

BJP supporter parties (NDA parties) are in power in Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Telangana, and Sikkim. Previously, BJP held Power in states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh only.

This way, BJP grabbed Power in 18 Indian States with coalition or NDA participation in 4 states. Amit Shah is credited for his strategy in holding power in Bihar, changing its political scenario. Also, the victory of the party in UP was remarkable where it kicked all the local and regional parties that had ever existed.

Presidential Elections

2017 was a challenging year for Indian Politics. Along with having Elections in popular states, there happened Elections for the Head-of-State position. UPA when framed Mira Kumar, the former Lok Sabha speaker as it’s candidate, NDA showcased Ramnath Kowind, Governor of Bihar as Presidential Candidate.

Since BJP-NDA had MPs and MLAs in 18 Indian States, Ramnath Kowind became the President and BJP’s senior minister Veinkaiyah Nayadu became the Vice President of Union of India, with a comfortable and significant margin.

Local Elections

In all the by-Elections that had taken place in the past 3-4 years, BJP has emerged as the victorious giant. This implies that BJP-NDA’s wind is still prevailing under Modi’s name.

When Municipal Elections were conducted after UP Elections in late 2017, 12/14 mayors formed were of BJP. This symbolized Yogi Adityanath’s triumph in Uttar Pradesh.

Power in North-East

Recently, Vidhan Sabha Elections were conducted in three states of North-East, namely Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Here, the rule was chiefly of the Left Front party, CPI(M) and Congress.

BJP fought in the elections and against everyone’s expectations thrashed CPI(M) in Tripura fetching 43/60 seats and NDA getting 31/60 seats in Nagaland. BJP got mere two seats in Meghalaya while INC won most of the seats, but NDA managed to gather 33 MLAs.

Thus, unexpectedly NDA Government gathered power in Meghalaya to having Conrad Sangma as the future CM of the state.

The Spread

BJP is a Government partner in 21/29 states today limiting Congress to mere 3 states; Punjab, Karnataka, and Mizoram. However remaining 5 states are presently ruled by other regional political parties.

The prime reason for this ultimate spread and diversification is the pair of Amit Shah and Narendra Modi. The face and popularity of Modi synchronized with the strategy and decisions of Amit Shah is the trump of Politics.

Thus, BJP is spreading its roots across entire India at all levels. There are 21 CMs of BJP and NDA, Governors in almost all Indian states, most of the Mayors in the ruling BJP States and most importantly, the entire cabinet in the Central Government of India, President and Vice President of India.
