The Masterpiece Movies of Bollywood; Bollywood is the Indian Filmmaking Industry which has so far produced millions of films that had earned worldwide significance. Conventionally Bollywood is known to introduce films that are full of drama and Indian aspects. Most of the movies focus on social norms and family issues. Others emphasize romance and some displayed abnormal action scenes. Bollywood, unfortunately, carries the ill reputation of producing logic fewer films that are just revolved around the star cast, ignoring the reality and possibilities.

It’s a bitter truth that there is Number of anomalies in the Bollywood industry and the movies created are not liked by all ages and communities of the audience. Yet, there have been a few movies that were true masterpieces and achieved international recognition. These films not only satisfied all categories of the audience for many many years but also made Bollywood and India proud. The following are top ten masterpieces among many. We will discuss the star cast and theme and then the basic plot of the creation in short.

1. Sholay

Cast: Sholay is an action movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Amzad Khan and Sanjeev Kumar. The movie is shot in Indian villages and had a perfect blend of action, love, revenge, and emotion.

Story: The movie revolves around Thakur who employs two brave men with a criminal record: Jay and Veeru and taking their help seek revenge from the bandit Gabbar. Meanwhile, the young men meet Basanti and Veeru fells in love with her, and Jay falls in love with Radha, Thakur’s son’s widow. They make plans and catch Gabbar after several efforts, resulting in Jay’s demise, but Thakur’s satisfaction.

Review: Sholay became the first Indian perfect film and served as a Milestone in Bollywood. The film was a big box office hit and had many famous songs with great picturisation. Dialogues of Sholay are still sensed by many even today and that’s why Sholay is called the best Masterpiece of Bollywood.

2. Mother India

Cast: Mother India is an emotional movie depicting a mother’s emotions. The film stars are Nargis and Sunil Dutt in the lead role. It is shot in typical Indian villages and is set just after the independence.

Story: The movie revolves around Nargis who is the mother of two, and she loved them like anything. The tale is based on her struggle. Her sons disfollow her at an instance and sensing threat to her and the society, Nargis takes a tough decision to finishes them for the betterment of all. She does it successfully and serves as an ideal mother, Mother India.

Review: Film was successful in India and earned praises being the first of it’s kind. The wonderful acting of Sunil Dutt and Nargis and some nice songs made it even better.

3. 3 Idiots

Cast: 3 Idiots is a comedy movie with a great message. Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan, Boman Irani constituted of its star cast. This Rajkumar Hirani film was based on Adolescent Education and their life, dilemmas, and future career.

Story: The story revolves around two friends who Raju and Farhan, who go around in search of their old friend Rancho who completely changed their life. They recall various incidents from their college life which basically forms the backbone of this movie. The film very nicely tells youngsters to follow their heart and interest when it comes to their education and career. Here, Rancho fells in love with Virus’ daughter Priya and is a good blend of many comical incidents.

Review: The film became the highest grosser of all time and remained so for a long time. Being inspired from Chetan Bhagat’s novel: ‘5 Point Someone’, 3 Idiots is still considered to be the best production of Bollywood ever. Some wonderful songs and perfect performances by every actor helped to make it a milestone film.

4. A Wednesday

Cast: A Wednesday is a psychological film starring Jimmy Shergill, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher in the lead role. The film is cast in the typical background of Mumbai and targeted on Terrorism issues.

Story: The story revolves around Commissioner Prakash of Mumbai Police who receives a random phone call from someone who threatens of exploding 4 bombs in Mumbai provided his demands aren’t satisfied. Prakash seeks the help of Aarif and another officer to fulfill the demands. The entire scene takes place on a phone call and various steps taken by Prakash to sustain harmony in the city. The caller asks for four terrorists to be left at a location and kills them, further discussing his motive and psychology behind doing the same.

Review: The film was highly appreciated by the critics and was not of everyone’s interest. The one of its kind films targeted terrorism and religious stereotypes of how terrorism is directly linked with Religion. The film is full of twists and turns and till the end, Naseeruddin Shah keeps his name as a secret for the viewers.

5. Lagaan

Cast: This sport based real incident derived film is full of emotions and action. The film had Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh and few foreigners in the cast. It is shot in Rajasthani village areas to show the pre-independence period of British rule.

Story: The story revolves around Bhuvan, a young farmer who accepts the challenge of a British official to play the cricket match with the British team, as a part of the bet to cancel their land tax for three consecutive years, if the villagers win and pay double the tax in that year if they lose. Bhuvan faced criticism from all the villagers but manages to win their trust and accumulate a team to combat them. They practiced hard in tough situations and seeking help secretly from the British Official’s sister, Bhuvan’s team becomes ready to play the match. Having great support from the village, heroically, the villagers win the match after facing numerous difficulties.

Review: The movie was highly appreciated by both Audiences and Critics and was nominated for the Oscar Awards but unfortunately couldn’t make it. The film very well displayed the hard work involved in the accomplishment of the mission of survival.

6. Mughal-E-Azam

Cast: The love story and Mughal drama movie star Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Prithviraj Kapoor, Johnny Walker and Durga Khote. The film is shot to observe the reign of Akbar the great and is basically a love story from History.

Story: Saleem falls in love with Anarkali, a servant of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and wishes to marry her. This is taken as a disgrace by Akbar, Anarkali being a servant and Saleem, the Indian prince. The entire story revolves around this plot, where Saleem tries his best to marry Anarkali, seeks help from Jodha Bai and finally gets into a state of war with his father, Akbar. Jodha tries her level best to stop war and differences between father and son but fails to result in actual war between them and Akbar winning it. At the end, Akbar gets Anarkali buried in a wall and triumphs the scene.

Review: The film was highly appreciated all over India and world. Still, it’s dialogues are considered classic and memorable. It very well displayed the complexities between a father and a son and efforts of a mother to rectify the situation. Mughal-E-Azam was a historically derived movie portrayed nicely.

7. PK

Cast: PK is a comedy movie starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajpoot in the lead role. The film is shot in Belgium, Rajasthani Villages and Delhi.

Story: The film revolves around PK who is an alien and visits the Earth. He gets his Space Remote Control stolen and in the entire story, his efforts to get his property back are shown. He learns an Indian language and comes across Jaggu, a news reporter who helps him. They team up to uncover that Awasthi Ji, a Religious Guru was fooling the people in the name of God and Religion, and he was the person who had purchased PK’s stolen property from the thief and claimed it as a unique religious piece. Filled with humorous incidents, the movie ends up killing false religious beliefs common among people and PK returning to his planet, after making Humans learn a lot from him.

Review: PK is one of its kind movie, a type of which could never be produced further with such perfection. The film became the highest grosser of its time and is still India’s 4th highest Earning movie. The movie rightly stroke the managers of God who earn in name of Religion and makes us perform useless religious practices.

8. Gangs of Wasseypur

Cast: An adult rated action movie, Gangs of Wasseypur has Manoj Bajpai, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chaddha and Huma Qureshi in the cast. The film is portrayed in Dhanbad and areas of Wasseypur.

Story: The story revolves around Sardar Khan whose father was murdered by Ramadhir Singh, MLA. Sardar becomes a smuggler with his uncle and marries Nagma and discusses his mission of destroying the life of Ramadhir. He becomes a ‘Bahubali’ and also combats with Sultan Qureshi, the meat dealer. His sons Faizal and Faizal’s elder brother engross in the same business with Sardar finally deciding to quit his wrong businesses and rather start taxing meat dealers. Later, Ramadhir and Qureshi join hands and terminate Sardar to reduce the risk to their own lives.

Review: This movie was full of abusive language and violence scenes. Surely, it was not of common interest and was a low budget film. Yet, it impressed everyone with the fine picturisation, dialogues, and action. It was based on a real incident of Dhanbad. The movie was followed by its sequel which was not as successful as this one.

9. OMG: Oh My God

Cast: It is a comedy film with a great message. Starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead role and Sonakshi Sinha in the guest appearance, OMG was shot in areas of Mumbai.

Story: The story revolves around Kanji Lalji Mehta who doesn’t believe in God and criticised anything associated with God. His shop gets demolished in an earthquake and he discovers that it was an Act of God. He comes across Krishna, the God in Human form when his family had left him and he had no money. Kaanji claims that God must pay for his loss and files a case against God and his managers of different religious groups and communities. Full of humorous and logical courtroom scenes, the film finally results in the side of Kaanji, who suffered a paralysis attack apparently as a punishment from Krishna. At the end, Krishna reveals his Identity of being the God making Kaanji realizing the existence of God and the way Humans are manipulated in the name of God and Religion.

Review: OMG was a big hit at the box office and was actually based on a popular Hindi Novel. The film before its release faced numerous protests as evidently, it surfaced the malpractices of Managers of God who had established false practices in the name of rituals to be aimlessly followed by everyone.

10. Pink

Cast: Pink is a thriller with deep meaning. It casts Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Andrea in the lead role. The film is shot in the Colonies of Mumbai to show present-day scenes.

Story: The movie revolves around three working girls who are roommates in a colony in Mumbai. They go to attend a party and get involved with three rich boys who molest them in the process of which one of the boys gets injured by Meenal. The girls face blackmailing by boys’ side resulting in the arrest of one of them by virtue of boys’ relative’s position. Girls hire Deepak, an old lawyer to defend their prestige and succeeds in the same after tons of efforts by Deepak.

Review: This film earned fame more than money and was served with many awards. Having Real life courtroom scenes, Pink became a feminist loving film. It gave the straight message to everyone that a girl is completely commander of her Modesty and no one can strangle with the same without her very consent.

So that was the list of ten masterpieces of Bollywood that would always be remembered worldwide for their uncommon values and milestone contributions to the Indian Film Industry.
